BROADCAST #05
AIR DATE: 01-29-08

Hello Fanatics! From Dublin Ireland the land of Guinness and blood, sometimes flowing in equal quantities down these hard and beautiful streets. A bit of a concept set tonight. Firstly, you will get an hour of music from the great SST label. This was the label owned and operated by Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski. In my mind, easily one of the greatest indie labels of all time. There was a period back in the 80’s when SST released one great record after another. From Black Flag to the likes of Soundgarden and Dinosaur Jr. the label was one of the guiding forces in independent music and along with labels like Dischord, Alternative Tentacles, Touch & Go and others, helped to shape how small labels do it now. Many of the bands that were on SST took their catalog and left after things went south. Many of the releases are out of print, which is a shame. I don’t know the status of SST at this point, who is running the show and what’s happening there. This super brief overview should not in any way be seen as comprehensive as there’s a ton of bands I left out. In fact, there’s a good part of the catalog, the later period, that I never heard. I just put on some of the bands that I toured with and saw fairly often. All these bands were good live, fantastic. I always felt lucky to have seen The Minutemen as many times as I did, actually, all the bands were really great. It was a great time for music in America and SST definitely was onto something. Now, in our second hour, seeing that I am in Dublin, down the road from Crumlin, Phil Lynott’s old neighborhood, I would be remiss if I didn’t play some Thin Lizzy. Again, nothing comprehensive but great songs nonetheless. Many people in America at least, never got past a few Lizzy songs played on the radio but there was plenty of good songs on all their albums. I came somewhat late to the game in that respect. I found the albums later on and can’t remember people in school or in my neighborhood with Thin Lizzy albums. It was a great discovery when I did. I cannot listen to Thin Lizzy without some slight degree of sadness thinking about the passing of the great Phil Lynott. You can go online and read all about the man and the band. I met a few of the members over the years, very cool people. Phil’s mother, Philomena, is one of the nicer people I have ever met. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this show tonight. I always try to list the sources from where I got the music so you can access it as easily as possible. If you see a best of or box set listed, it’s usually because the mastering is better or just out of sheer convenience. There are often many other ways to get to the music than the sources I use. By the time you hear this, I will have been off stage for awhile and getting ready to go to Glasgow, where one is advised to be polite as the locals are often quick of temper and unrestrained in their violent displays. When in Scotland if you get asked, “Do you fancy hospital food?” –just run. They’re also one of the greatest audiences on the planet. Please tune in next week as it will be music from all over Africa as I will be in the southern part of that dark and wild continent. The shows have been going great out here and all is well. Until next week, raise your glasses high and STAY FANATIC!!! --Henry
