BROADCAST #18
AIR DATE: 04-29-08
Fanatics!!! Hello from New Zealand where the skies are blue and the sheep
are many. The Australian shows were great and I am looking forward to getting
back there soon. Now, what Engineer X and I have for you tonight is a killer
set of a perfect album along with some great tracks to follow. We are going
to listen to Television’s debut album Marquee Moon. Recorded
in 1975, released in 1977 and produced by Verlaine and Andy Johns. Television’s
lead guitar and vocalist, Tom Verlaine is not only one of the greatest musicians
to come out of 1970’s New York music scene but an influence on bands
and musicians all over the world. No one sounds like Verlaine. That being
said, Television was a very solid band featuring the very accomplished Richard
Lloyd on 2nd guitar and the considerable talents of Billy Ficca on drums and
Fred Smith on bass. I saw Ficca play with Concrete Blonde once, he was great.
Television followed up their MM album with a great album called Adventure
that is perhaps not as iconic as their previous effort but absolutely worth
checking out as are Verlaine’s first two solo albums Tom Verlaine
and Dreamtime. As you Fanatics know, we have played Television and
some of Verlaine’s solo efforts on our show before so some of these
songs will be familiar to you, even to the few of you who are not familiar
with this album. I think it’s safe to say that Marquee Moon is
one of those album that at the very least, should be checked out at least
once and in my opinion, should be in your ever growing arsenal of music. Remember,
do not let a week go by where you do not have more music than the week before.
There’s no going backwards here! Onwards! More! After we listen to Marquee
Moon and the non-LP tracks Little Johnny Jewel Pts. 1&2, we go into
a great 9 track mix of great New York music. All tracks are readily available
except for the Stims track, which is taken off my single I bought from the
band in 1979 or 1980 at a Cramps show at Irving Plaza in NYC. Great music
from start to finish tonight, Fanatics! Next week’s show will be a great
mix of music from all over the place as we like to do. Over the last few weeks,
I have been accumulating some great local music out of Australia, bands that
perhaps you have never heard of that I think you will be pleased with so get
ready for that. I will leave this in the hands of Engineer X to induce the
computer at Indie 103 to hurl tonight’s broadcast your way and hope
for the best. Until next week, STAY FANATIC!!! --Henry
